| Widener Ranked in top 100 of "Best" Colleges in Nation
Widener was ranked 52 in the nation in the 2006 Washington Monthly college rankings. Only two universities located in Pennsylvania were ranked higher – Pennsylvania State University, College Park (3) and University of Pennsylvania (30).
Based on different assumptions about what constitutes the "best" schools as compared to traditional ranking systems such as the U.S. News & World Report college rankings, the Washington Monthly
ranking system asks the question: What are reasonable indicators of how
much a school is benefiting the country? Three factors determine the
ranking system - how well a school performs as an engine of social
mobility (ideally helping the poor to get rich rather than the very
rich to get very, very rich), how well a school does in fostering
scientific and humanistic research, and how well a school promotes an
ethic of service to country.
For comparison, other ranked Pennsylvania schools include, Carnegie Mellon University (54), University of Pittsburgh (66), Temple University (130), and Drexel University (214).
